I love stereograms

Stereograms are pictures that have been specially altered so that if you stare at them in a certain way, you will see a 3D image. Click on the image and then as you look at the picture change the focus of your eyes. When you think you start to see something, focus on it and the image should instantly appear.

New 'old' dance

Here is an 'old' dance by Jo Thompson Szymanski called Come Dance with Me. Instead of using the suggested track 'Come Dance with Me' by Nancy Hayes, these folks are doing it to the song "Was That The Human Thing To Do?" by Nat King Cole. What a wonderful song to dance it to!

New dance - The Rush

Alison Biggs & Peter Metelnick has put out a new dance called The Rush. It's a great dance to a track that's really danceable. This dance is fast, but the steps aren't too hard. Bottom line? It's a good song and the dance is fun. That's what counts.

Note: due to copyright issues, the video below doesn't have any sound. If you'd like to hear the song, go here.

New dance - Barefoot Blue Jean Night

Today's new dance is one called Barefoot Blue Jean Night and is choreographed by my friend Kathy Verkamp. The dance has a nice feel to it and works well with the country music "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" by Jake Owen. Give it a try and see what you think! Every time I dance it, the dance grows on me a little bit more.

NC Regional Line Dance review

Review by Susan Webb:

A NC Regional Line Dance workshop was held last Saturday, November 12 at Wyse Fork Community Building in Dover, hosted by Diane Hargett.

Diane Hargett and Bonnie Mathews taught dances in the Easy Intermediate session.
  • Wild Thang by Sue Ann Ehmann to Wild Thang by Johnny Williams. It is a 32 count, 4 wall dance with no tags or restarts with some fun hips/knees. The first 8 count is the hardest but the rest quite easy.

  • Rude Boy by Junior Willis and Amy Spenser is a 48 count, 4 wall phrased dance to Rude Boy by Rihanna. The phrasing is easy, Part A is 32 counts and B is 16 counts. B is only done on the front and back walls. The dance combines Junior's signature steps with Amy's funky style.

  • Kick Start by Kim Ray is a 48 count 4 wall dance done to Kick Start by JLS. 48 counts are only done 3 times and the last 16 counts are left out the rest of the dance.

Dances taught in the Intermediate/Advanced session were as follows:
  • BC Beach taught Walkin' Blues by Jill Babinec and Debi Pancoast, an intermediate 48 count, 2 wall, west coast swing line dance danced to the music Walkin' Blues by Melinda Doolittle. It has some fun pelvis rocks, shorty george's, and a roly poly jazz box along with the more traditional steps.

  • Bonnie Mathews taught Throw the Dice by Joey Warren, an advanced 2 wall funky phrased dance with a tag and a restart. It is danced to the music, Hit Me Up by Danny Fernandes ft. Josh Ramsay. A is easy, B gets "footsy", and the tag takes practice since the count is different from the beginning of the dance which you usually do at that point.

  • Susan Webb taught Hurt Me So by Scott Blevins, a 32 count 4 wall intermediate dance with no tags or restarts danced to the music, Hurt Me So (Lack of Afro mix) by The Diplomats of Solid Sound. The walls are not hard to do after learning the first wall, but the fast tempo of the music makes the dance a little more of a challenge but another great dance by Scott.

  • Renita Vega taught Never Enough by Joey Warren, a 32 count 2 wall very pretty smooth intermediate dance with 2 restarts and 1 tag danced to the music Addicted by Prince Royce.

Thanks to the teachers and the participants for making this a fun workshop and for all the great food everyone brought.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. We will not have a regional workshop in December since it is such a busy time for everyone. Have a great holiday season. I look forward to seeing you in January.

This week's new line dances

These are but a few of the line dances that have come out recently that I like. Each dance is judged (by me) on its own merits and not whether it's on a top ten list somewhere.

First up is Samba del Rio by Alison Johnstone. Alison's dance is a 64 Count, 2 Wall, intermediate level samba rhythm line dance done to the song Brazilian Love Affair by Shakatak. Juliet and her great dancers perform and teach the dance.

Next is a nice little country line dance called Seein' Double. Steve & Denise Bisson choreographed the dance to the song Feelin' Single, Seein' Double by Ann Tayler:

No tags? No restarts? I'm in! Wild Thang, a line dance by Sue Ann Ehmann, is a 32 count easy intermediate dance done to Wild Thang (All Night Long) by Johnny Williams. It's not quite the same "Wild Thing" that you've heard though.

Last (but not least) we have the dance La Llama, choreographed by Maria Maag. Maria's dance is a 64 count intermediate/advanced cha cha line dance, so get your thinking caps ready. The music? La Llama by Chris Ice.

As always, thanks go out to the fine choreographers, dancers, and instructors that make line dancing enjoyable!

Havelock line dance list - 11/9

From Nan:

Here is the playlist for the Wednesday Nov 9 line dance in Havelock. I surely missed dancing this past Wed and look forward to seeing all this coming week. $3 each.

I know a few who already have let me know they will be unable to attend on the 16th. If you know you will not be able to attend, if you could let me know so we can decide if we have enough to get together for the 16th. Don't forget we will not be dancing on the 23rd, the night before Thanksgiving.

Also we need to decide which Wed in Dec we can meet prior to our 7 dance time to have Christmas dinner together . Let me know your preference--Dec 7, 14, or 21st.

Thanks. See you on Wed. Take care. Nan

Also thanks go out to to Juliet and her wonderful group of dancers that make all of these great Youtube videos for the line dancing community. I thank all of you for what you do.

Laughing baby video

I can't resist posting videos like this. They always bring a smile to your face a and a laugh to your lips, which is a great way to start the day!

The baby is in a bathtub, and a puppy comes to take a look. The baby starts laughing when the puppy tries to grab the baby's toy. From there on it's all smiles.

New dances to check out

I Didn't Know that a line dance would be written to a nice peppy two step country song. I'm really enjoying the song and can't wait to try the dance live! Thank you choreographers Alan G Birchall & Jacqui.

Here's another line dance done to a movin' two step! It's name? Hip Hop Honky Stomp choreographed by Regina Cheung.

New line dances - 10/24

First new dance up is Marie Sorensen's Margaritas & Senoritas. I think you'll enjoy the easy latin beat of this beginner level dance.

No Llores, by Ria Vos, is an intermediate level line dance whose music has a good latin feel to it.

It's that time of the year again... Hallowe'en! Dodo Wong's Silly Spooks is a nice beginner level line dance whose music sounds just right for the holiday.

Want to try a dance out that goes to Michael Jackson's Thriller? Why not try Winnie Yu's Thriller line dance? Many of the moves look like they are modeled after the moves done in the music video. It looks like great fun!

Learn in the middle

Line dancing tip -
If you are learning a dance for the first time and want to have the best chance of seeing the steps and having fun, you will want to position yourself in the middle of the dance floor behind the instructor. This might sound scary, but the middle is the best place to start because most dances face different walls, and you will always have someone in front of you so you're not "out on an island", so to speak, at any point. You also get to watch the instructor more closely (they're supposed to know the dance), and when you ask questions you won't feel like everyone is looking at you.

This week's new dances - Directions and My Heart Belongs to You

Rosie Morrison's new dance Directions is a fun beg/int dance that is done to Billy Currington's 'Directions'. The dance is fun to do and the song is fun to listen to!

My Heart Belongs to You was done by Fred Buckley and is a fun little dance. It reminds me of the fun country dances we used to do in the 90s.

New dance to look at - Cha Cha Romo

I'm liking this song/dance combo the more I listen to/watch it. The dance is called Cha Cha Romo and was choreographed by Gordon Timms and Alison Johnstone. This dance fits well with the song, and the song has a good beat for dancing. These are requirements of mine for trying a dance. Take a look for yourself!

Hurricane Irene

To all my friends in North Carolina... PREPARE!

IRENE INFORMATION, MAPS, ETC

- Weather Underground
- National Hurricane Center

Hurricane Irene is going to be on our doorstep soon and folks need to be ready!
  1. First, get important papers and special photos in order and secured in plastic. Identification is difficult and time-consuming to replace: so be sure to include social security cards, birth certificates, high school diplomas or GED certificates, titles or deeds to property, as well as your hurricane insurance policy. Photos of special occasions or loved ones cannot be replaced, so including these is important as well.

  2. Think ahead and take video or photos of your property before you leave. This will help later on with any insurance checklist claims for damage that may need to be filed.

  3. If staying with relatives is not an option, consider booking a room in a hotel or motel in another nearby town or state. Make sure to get directions and put them in the car ahead of time. It is easy to forget that piece of paper in the rush out the door. A cheaper route might be to find temporary hurricane shelters. Usually nearby towns not in the direct path of the hurricane will provide these for people in need.

  4. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that your pet will have a place in a motel or hotel. Keep this in mind, and try to find alternate housing like pet-friendly hotels and motels or dog boarding kennels in areas out of the path of the storm until it is safe to return home.

  5. Designate a spot, in the hall closet, to keep a bag of clothes for each person in the household. Make sure to include sleeping gear if you plan on going to a temporary shelter.

  6. Along with overnight clothes, consider stocking your Hurricane Kit with the following: extra cash, generator, batteries, flash lights, battery operated radio/television, bottled water, toilet paper, non-perishable foods such as cereal or crackers, canned goods, a can opener, a small cooler, candles, prescription medicines and any over-the-counter remedies you use regularly; and if you have small children - diapers, baby wipes, formula, baby food.

  7. Count on the power being out for at least a day or two. Remember that ATM's will be non-operating, so have at least some hard cash in your Hurricane Kit (see no. 6, above) to see you through the storm.

When TV and computer games no longer operate, board games or a deck of cards come in handy! Arts and crafts, crayons and downloadable coloring pages are always great distractions for the kids - so make sure you've stored some of these supplies in a tote bag or in the car trunk.

  8. If you decide to tough out the storm, stay downwind in your home. This means if the wind is hitting the living room windows, go to the room opposite the living room.

  9. Plywood is a 'hot' commodity for those of who decide to stay. Boarding up windows that will take the brunt of the wind and rain is a wise decision. If board is not available, protect your windows from the wind by criss-crossing them with layers of duct or packing tape. This will be enough protection for light-to-medium winds, but learning how to build and install plywood hurricane shutters is your safest bet. If you can afford it, have them installed by a professional.

  10. Finally, STAY INSIDE. However tempting it may be to videotape or take photos of the storm, be sure to shoot from indoors - where it's safe, and dry!
Hurricanes are serious business. Weather forecasters can only predict so much. Educate yourself and stay on top of hurricane updates in your area. There is no harm in being overly cautious. In most cases where a hurricane is concerned, it truly is better to be safe than sorry.

Tips are from Chiff.com

Entire Kickit step sheet collection on iPad

Who would have thought you could take the entire step sheet collection on Kickit and put it on an iPad? 50,000+ line dances, ready to go! It's neat to be able to have all of the step sheets in one place and in a searchable condition. It's also great to have the Youtube videos of the dances I'm currently teaching or have taught recently ready to go so I can review faster and show the students the dance whenever they want to see it. My iPad 2 is truly a useful tool!

If you have an iPad and want to know how I did this, email me!

Videos and music

When you find a dance you like, chances are you now go to Youtube.com to see if a video of it has been posted. Usually you'll find a video of the dance and in the video the music that goes with the dance will be played.

It's times like these that sites like Keepvid become quite useful.

And now, a sweet slow song...

Wow, Imelda May certainly has a beautiful voice. Too bad she isn't more popular as we would all be able to hear her more on the airwaves. "Who is Imelda May?" you say. She's the lady who sings the song Johnny Got a Boom Boom that we've all danced the line dance of the same name to. Ms. May isn't a one hit wonder, as a perusal of her songs will attest.

It's time to sit back, turn the lights down low, and snuggle up with the one you love...

Havelock line dancing playlist for August 3

From Nan:
Triple Play, Rolling in the Deep and Shake It For Me were introduced at the Workshop Sat. and since most everyone was at the workshop, we will only do a quick walkthru if needed so let me know if you want a walkthru before we get started (email or let me know Wed).

I will add other dances introduced at workshop--a couple at a time in the coming weeks as requested so let me know what you liked. The number dancing on floor will determine keepers!

Mambo Tequilla and 2Nite have been taught at Rivertowne for the past few weeks.

Line dancing?

Line dancing is a great way to work on body and foot technique. I still hear how many people can't stand line dancing and I think it is because they haven't tried it recently. No longer is it danced just to country music, line dancing is danced to every kind of music from swing to top 40 pop. Its fun and it teaches us coordination. This is how some dancers learn to syncopate for west coast swing or cha cha, its a chance to work on feet instead of lead and follow. Its great exercise and challenging to say the least. Line dancing has come a long way in the past 10 years or so. It may not be the greatest thing to sit and watch but it sure is fun to participate. Give it a try, work on foot positions, foot placements, arm styling, Cuban motion, etc. and you will find it improves your couples dancing as well.

A little dance floor etiquette

Here are a few things to be mindful of when you're dancing:
  • Never come onto the dance floor carrying drinks, glasses, or cans.
  • Never stay on the floor to talk – if the music has started, go off the dance floor to chat.
  • A corollary is don't chat during a dance class. It's a disrespect to the instructor. If you must talk, take it to a place where it won't be heard by anyone in the class.
  • Remember everyone was once a beginner - don't show off or change the steps of a dance if there are beginners on the floor.
  • The more you move while dancing, the more you go to the outside. Spot dances stay in the center; progressive couples dances go around the outside of the dance floor in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • Those dancing around the outside lane have the right of way. Don't block their progress.
  • If you should bump into someone or someone bumps into you, apologize. It doesn't matter whose fault it is.
  • Never walk through a line of dancers to cross the floor – always walk round the floor or wait.
  • Most importantly... enjoy yourselves and the company of the other dancers!

NC Regional Line Dance Workshop Review

(Note: I added the links to the step sheets and the dance videos.)

From Susan Webb:

A Regional Line Dance Workshop was held at Susan's Place in Stantonsburg, NC Saturday, June 25. We had a nice crowd with quite a few new people who have never been to our regionals before.

We started the Beg/Easy Intermediate session with me teaching Wonderland Waltz (video) by Rob Fowler, a 48 count 2 wall waltz which is danced to the music Welcome To Mystery by Plain White T's.

Then I taught U A Freak (video) by Amy Spenser, a 48 count 2 wall fun contra dance danced to the music, U A Freak by Chingy. There is always so much laughter when doing the paddy cake hand part of this dance!

Renita Vega from Fayetteville taught Soul Food (official video) by Lorenzo "golo" Evans, a 1 wall 72 count phrased urban/soul line dance danced to the music Collard Greens and Cornbread by Fantasia. Quite a few people had wanted to learn this dance who had not had it before, and they did wonderfully on it with a great teach by Renita.

Karla Stith from Jacksonville taught Somewhere With You (video) by Junior Willis and Scott Schrank, a 4 wall 32 count dance with 2 restarts danced to the music Somewhere With You by Kenny Chesney.

BC Beach from New Bern started out the afternoon intermediate session teaching Slingin' Mud (video) by Guyton Mundy and Will Craig, a phrased fun easy intermediate line dance danced to the music Kickin Up Mud by The Lacs.

Brenda Smith from Roxboro taught Papi (video) by Rachael McEnaney, a 2 wall 64 count high intermediate dance with 2 "easy to remember" restarts which occur in the same place in the dance. This is a really pretty cha cha line dance danced to the music Papi by Jennifer Lopez.

Renita Vega from Fayetteville taught What's My Name (video) by Dan McInerney, a 4 wall 32 count high intermediate dance with 1 restart danced to the music What's My Name by Rihanna. We used the short version which is the preferred version but it can also be danced to the longer version featuring Drake but would have 2 restarts. It is a fun fast dance.

Karla Stith from Jacksonville taught Bittersweet Memory (video) by Ria Vos, a 4 wall 32 count NC2 with one tag danced to the music Clouds by David Nail. It is a beautiful dance to watch.

I taught Descarada (video)by Joey Warren, a 4 wall 32 count dance with a 16 count tag done 3 times danced to the music Descarada by Pitbull. The dance hits the beats of the music great and is a fun funky dance.

We had a request list and open dancing between teaches. I heard many positive comments about all the dances taught during the day. Thanks to all the participants and instructors who made it a really fun workshop. And, OMG, thanks to everyone who brought such wonderful covered dishes, sandwiches, sweets, and snacks to share during the day.

The next NC Regional Line Dance workshop will be held at Rivertowne Ballroom in New Bern on July 30. More details will follow later.

Don Don, the Lights step sheet

Don Don The Lights!

Choreographed by: Jim Hart and Don Deyne
Description: 32 count - 2 wall - Beg/Int level line dance
Music: Dim Dim The Lights by Bill Haley

Note: The first part of this dance is a modified version of Don Deyne’s “Shaggin’ the Line.” The first 24 counts (MAIN) are done each wall; the music determines when the various tags are done. My suggestion is to listen to the song while looking at the step sheet a few times before you actually try the dance.
The order of the tags is:
  1. MAIN, FREEZE
  2. MAIN, STEP TOUCHES
  3. MAIN, FREEZE
  4. MAIN, SUZY-Q
  5. MAIN, FREEZE, MAMBO STEPS
  6. MAIN, FREEZE
  7. MAIN, SUZY-Q
  8. MAIN, STEP TOUCHES
  9. MAIN, FREEZE
  10. MAIN, ENDING
Instructor should call out all tags for the class until the class gets used to when the tags are done – make sure you call them out before you get to the full turn on beats 23-24! ... Jim
